Cookery Students Host the Lord Lieutenancy Dinner and Seminar at The Wharncliffe Restaurant

29 May 2019

Professional Cookery students at Rotherham College had the opportunity to cook for and host the South Yorkshire Lord Lieutenancy Dinner and Seminar. The event was held at Rotherham College’s commercial restaurant, The Wharncliffe.

Students were required to develop a custom menu specifically for the event and prepare food for dozens of guests in attendance. In addition to this, students were responsible for specific table setting and serving each course to the highest standard.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Mr. Andrew Coombe said “The Lieutenancy recently held a meeting at Wharncliffe Restaurant.  The quality of the food, the presentation and service were all of the highest quality. What made this so remarkable was that everything was prepared and delivered by students studying at Rotherham College.

“The students’ enthusiasm and professionalism were a credit both to themselves and Rotherham College. Many of those attending were fulsome in their praise for a remarkable experience. On their behalf, I send our thanks, best wishes and congratulations to both the students and the staff at the Wharncliffe Restaurant. ”

Chloe Hindley, Level 1 Professional Cookery student explained “Being involved with an event such as the Lord Lieutenancy Dinner means I’m exposed to different experiences and requirements. Typically we work with a set menu but with a custom menu, I’m presented with new challenges such as serving placements and serving timings.”

Amelia Barron, Level 3 Advanced Professional Cookery student, said “I’ve really enjoyed preparing food for the Lord Lieutenancy Dinner and Seminar. I was working on the desserts for the evening. All the training and experience I’ve had in the past has really helped me feel confident in producing the highest quality desserts for all the guests. Nevertheless, I still felt the pressure in making sure the presentation is absolutely perfect.”

John Deehan, Commercial Manager and Trainer at The Wharncliffe said “It was a privilege to host the Seminar and Dinner for the Lord Lieutenancy.  The evening provided learners with valuable experience for servicing events and functions, and also allowed us the opportunity to showcase the outstanding facilities where our learners develop their employability skills here at The Wharncliffe.”
