In November students from Toyo College of Hair Designers in Japan visited Rotherham College and University Centre Rotherham (UCR) with their Principal and teacher to exchange skills, information and to experience different cultures with students from Fashion, Hair and Beauty and Media Make-up.
The day began in Rotherham College’s hair training salon, Inspire, where the Japanese students communicated and shared cultural questions with Level 1 Hair and Beauty students.
The workshop was followed by lunch at Rotherham College’s training restaurant, The Wharncliffe, and in the afternoon at UCR, the Japanese students created a traditional full Geisha look to showcase their skills to the Rotherham College and UCR students and staff and to teach about their culture and traditions.
Anne Derbyshire, a Hair and Beauty lecturer at Rotherham College, said, “The exchange programme has been running for three years at Rotherham College, and it’s been a pleasure to work with Toyo College for two of them.
“Last year one of our Media Make-up students had the opportunity to visit Tokyo, and it’s opportunities like these that gives both our students and students from Toyo College the chance to build on their communications skills, as well as gain valuable knowledge of each other’s traditional and modern cultures.”
Rotherham College is working to arrange for further groups of students to take part in future exchanges and hope to create more exciting new opportunities with the Japanese College.
