Musical Theatre Students Inspired by Professional Dance Workshop

11 February 2022

Recently, Rotherham College Level 1, 2 and 3 Musical Theatre students took part in a specialist dance workshop, hosted by the Northern School of Contemporary Dance at Rotherham College’s Studio Theatre.

The Dance workshop, held by professional dance teacher Charlotte Jones, enabled the students to explore the world of contemporary dance throughout the two-hour session. Charlotte graduated from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2017 and has since been delivering professional standard dance and yoga classes across Yorkshire.

Charlotte’s workshop was centred around allowing the Rotherham College students to try new forms of dance in order to express themselves. The Musical Theatre students trialled a range of new and exciting dance choreography and learnt new and effective warm-up routines that included yoga and team-building exercises.

The Northern School of Contemporary Dance is a higher education institution in Leeds, West Yorkshire specialising in modern contemporary dance. They provide a wide range of workshops and courses in order to promote dynamic and inspirational learning.

Ben Wainwright, who is a Performing Arts lecturer at Rotherham College, explained that Rotherham College hosts many workshops in order for students to meet industry experienced performers.

He said: “It was fantastic for the students to practice a range of different types of dance with an experienced professional. The workshop has allowed them to explore new styles that they may have enjoyed and want to specialise in going forward.

“They will also find the warm-up tips and stretches very helpful, as they can use these for a variety of dance performances.

“Charlotte is a great role model for the students. Not only has she taught them a whole host of useful dance related skills, she has also offered them career tips and educational advice.”

Rotherham College offers courses in a range of creative Performing Arts courses, including Musical Theatre, Music Technology, Acting and Dancing. These courses are designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the performance and events industries.

Students learn their creative craft in industry-standard facilities, such as our state-of-the-art dance studio and practice with the finest equipment.
