intercollege competition 2022 - Grimsby

Students showcase skills in Inter-college Championship

18 March 2022

Students from Rotherham College, North Notts College and Dearne Valley College (also part of the RNN Group) recently travelled to Grimsby Institute to participate in a friendly inter-college championship. The competition saw a showcase of specialist skills in a wide range of subjects covering over 30 areas.

Rotherham College, Dearne Valley College, and North Notts College teamed up to win a total of 18 competitions, beating our previous record in 2019 of 17 wins.

Students from a diverse range of subject areas across the colleges took part in challenges that reflected the industry-standard skills they have developed on their courses.

With the aim to inspire students to further their skills and showcase their abilities, a wide range of challenges were completed in Animal Care, Arts, Media Make-up, Computing, E-Gaming, Engineering, Construction, Sport, and many more.

Rotherham College’s Catering and Hospitality students came first place in both the Level 1 and 2 competitions, where they had to create and present a three-course meal that included a variety of exciting, bespoke dishes. Rotherham College’s Media Make-up students also came away victorious in both the Level 2 and 3 competitions, after creating a series of stunning final looks that wowed the judges.

Student Jessie Roberts, who won the Level 3 Media Make-up gold medal said:

“I loved having the opportunity to compete in such a fantastic competition. It was an amazing experience for me and it felt great to be able to showcase my skills on such a big stage. Winning gold was an incredible feeling!”

Other gold medal wins came from a variety of curriculum areas such as Animal Care, Health and Social Care, Brickwork, Plumbing, Welding, Motor Vehicle, Visual Arts, Photography, Film and Media, Public Services, and Hair and Beauty.

Music students from Rotherham College and North Notts College were also crowned winners in the heavily contested Battle of the Bands.

The Grimsby Institute were excellent hosts and made the return of the well-loved event an epic spectacle after a two year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The connection between the colleges that form the Inter-College Competition was created by Grimsby Institute’s Principal Debra Gray, as she was also the former Dearne Valley College Principal until 2017. She said:

“I am really proud that the Grimsby Institute has won the Inter College Competition this year. But I’d like to say a massive thank you to our competitors from Rotherham College, North Notts College and Dearne Valley College who came and brought their A-game today and actually wiped the floor with us in a number of areas. We can’t wait for the challenge next year, and we are looking forward to seeing the competition being hosted in Rotherham next time”.
