Achieving Excellence: Student Wins Work Experience Award for Outstanding Work

1 July 2022

A Rotherham College student has won the ‘’Outstanding Work Placement Award’’ of the month for their fantastic efforts in recording the Rotherham Titans last game of the season.

Level 3 Year 1 Creative Media Production student Blake Morley was nominated by John Whaling, Director of Rotherham Titans, due to how engaged he was on the day and how well he represented Rotherham College.

Blake managed to capture moments of the last game of the season, and helped to create a 10-minute showreel of the sporting event. He also interviewed players and local fans, displaying excellent communication skills.

The work experience was organised through the ‘Higher Skills, Higher Growth’ Scheme. ‘Higher Skills, Higher Growth’ aims to connect young people with training opportunities, short and long-term projects and placements, and match skilled individuals to appropriate work. This is delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, The Sheffield College and the RNN Group, who run Rotherham College, Dearne Valley College, North Notts College (Including the Retford Post-16 Centre, and University Centre Rotherham.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the day, which was made even better by Rotherham Titans securing a win.

John Whaling, Director of Rotherham Titans, said Blake set a sterling example for other young people.

He said: ‘’It was a fantastic event, and having Blake there to capture special moments means it will be a day to look back on and remember for the team.

‘’He stuck out by wanting to be involved in as much as possible and made a lasting impression.

‘’He thoroughly deserves this award.’’

Blake was thrilled to win his award, and stated taking part in the event was a great experience.

He said: ‘’I was really surprised to get this award – I wasn’t expecting John to be there and to receive a prize of £20.

‘’The event taught me how to use my initiative and have freedom with what I wanted to capture and who I wanted to interview.

‘’I made sure I did whatever I could to get the most experience possible for the industry.’’
