College Students to Perform on London Stage for Theatre Festival

28 June 2017

Performing Arts students from Rotherham College are set to perform on the big stage in London as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival 2017.

The students were chosen from nearly 40 other companies and will be performing the play ‘Status Update’ by celebrated, Sheffield-born playwright, Tim Etchells, supported by top directors from the National Theatre, and by Tim Etchells himself. Their performance will take place on the prestigious Dorfman Theatre stage in London on Saturday 1st July.

Rotherham College’s Curriculum Leader for Performing Arts, Denny Smith said of the event:

“We are immensely proud of the students who have taken this fantastic opportunity and made it a success. It will be an honour to perform at the Dorfman Theatre, and our students were especially excited to hear that Andrew Garfield will be performing in the same building on the same evening in the ‘Angels in America’ production.”

The National Theatre Connections Festival aims to inspire, educate and celebrate Britain’s next generation of acting talent. Student, Caylen Tucker is studying on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Musical Theatre at Rotherham College, awarded by the University of Arts London, and will be performing in the play. She added:

“I can honestly say that this journey so far has been unforgettable. Before this I’d never experienced anything like the connections festival and I wasn’t aware of how amazing it would be or how many doors it would open for me personally. Our Tutor, Denny smith, who has been our Director throughout the connections festival, is an absolute pleasure to work with and is such a credit to our piece. His determination and passion about our performance has really been highlighted through our own performances on stage.”

“Overall this experience and studying at Rotherham College has been amazing from start to finish. I recommend anyone that wants a taste of working as part of a professional company and loves performing alongside great people to do it!”

The College has a strong performing arts provision with dedicated facilities including the Studio Theatre at the Rotherham Town Centre campus, and offers Performing Arts courses and apprenticeships from Level 1 up to the full BA (Hons) Degree in Theatre, Acting and Performance, taught by industry-experienced lecturers. Students take part in regular performances, theatre trips and industry guest-speaker sessions.
