Performance learners wow in Winter showcase extravaganza

6 February 2020

Rotherham College Level 3 Performance learners recently delighted audiences with their incredible acting, musical, and dance abilities in a dazzling variety show.

The impressive display featured a mix of solo, duet and group acts and included contemporary dance performances to pop hits including Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy and David Bowie’s Life on Mars, as well as theatre classics ‘Hit me with your best shot’ from Rock of Ages, ‘One Short Day’ from Wicked, and ‘Razzle Dazzle’ from Chicago.

The show also addressed more serious themes such as domestic abuse. One particularly captivating performance portrayed the intense struggle between two people in a relationship ruled by domestic abuse to Sara Bareilles’ emotive track ‘Gravity’.

Rotherham College Level 3 Performing Arts learner Marta Silvestre performed in several routines.

Marta said: “Preparation for the show started back in September where we learnt harmonies and then began adding movement. I want to go into the West End and the winter showcase process is the perfect preparation for that. We’ve gone through the whole rehearsal process, learnt how to perform in a show, how to behave and do quick changes.”

Rotherham College’s Dance Lecturer Ben Wainwright was key to the show’s development.

Ben said: “Our students did an outstanding job and they really enjoyed it, I’m incredibly proud. We had excellent feedback from parents and audience members too.

“The winter showcase is a great opportunity for students to display industry-based knowledge, skills and behaviours.”

As well as delivering top-quality performances in the live show, students were also instrumental in developing the show’s narrative and choreography. Ben said: “It’s a combination of me leading and the students’ choreography and direction too. Their input is invaluable.”

The next live show will be of Cats on 10th and 11th of June. Tickets are available from Rotherham College Eastwood curriculum office for £5 each but are free for students.
