Students and Apprentices Help Launch Hate Crime Campaign

4 April 2018

Media students and digital apprentices from Rotherham College, as well as learners from Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, gave a collaborative effort on creating, recording and acting in five videos targeting hate crime.

Hate crime is a crime committed against someone because of their race, religion, sexuality, disability or gender – this is the only initiative in the country created by young people for young people, and these videos have since been made live across social media.

The launch event was attended by South Yorkshire Police, Rotherham United Football Club and the Community Trust, as well as South Yorkshire Police Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings and Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Eve Rose Keenan.

Dr Alan Billings said: “The messages involved in these videos are serious. Some people think a little bit of banter between friends or colleagues is ok. What they do not realise is that the person on the end of the joke doesn’t always see it as banter.”

The videos created by the students can be found here.
