Rotherham College Support Local Community at the Get Up to Speed (GUTS) Event
Rotherham College have attended the annual Get Up To Speed (GUTS) event at Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham to provide local primary and secondary schools, parents and educators with information, advice and guidance on what courses and apprenticeships are available to provide learners with skills needed to succeed.
With over 3,000 visitors and 90 exhibitors, the 9th annual GUTS event aimed to engage the next generation of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students with industry-relevant local further and higher education provision and apprenticeships.
Rotherham College Electrical Technicians Gary Bromehead and Jamie Pilley represented Rotherham College’s Engineering department at the Get Up To Speed event.
Gary said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many students across different ages coming up to us and being excited to take part in our activities.
“We set up a few different engineering-themed interactive games such as a programming game where we enter a 4 digit code and visitors need to guess the correct code with the digits in the right order. The great thing here is that the motherboard doing the workings out is exposed so they can see how their guesses are calculated.”
Jamie added: “This is a great opportunity to plant that thought in young students’ minds that they can develop their skills and build a future in what they want in their local area.
“It’s encouraging to see a large amount of students getting ready to take their GCSEs next year come over to us and ask us so many questions about engineering; you can clearly see their level of interest and that this is what they want to do.
“Providing these students with more information and guidance on their local choices can only help motivate them to push toward their goals.”
