Sean Bean’s Journey from Rotherham College to the Big Screen
When you walk through the halls of Rotherham College, you might imagine hearing echoes of an unlikely origin story, that of Sean Bean, one of Britain’s most respected and versatile actors.
Born Shaun Mark Bean in 1959 in Handsworth, Sheffield, Sean initially had his sights set on joining the family business. After leaving school with O‑levels in Art and English, he took on odd jobs, including selling cheese in a supermarket and shoveling snow, but found himself drawn back to learning. He joined his father’s welding firm and, once a week, attended Rotherham Collegeto study welding.
It was at Rotherham College that Sean stumbled upon an art class and found the spark for something more. Immersed in drawing and creative projects, he realised his interests leaned beyond metalwork . Encouraged by his tutors, he took an even bolder step, enrolling in a performing arts course at the college.
At Rotherham, he performed in college productions, including at the Rotherham Civic Theatre, and soon discovered his potential. His performances impressed the faculty and he earned a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, beginning his studies there in January 1981.
Reflecting on that time, Sean recalled how Rotherham College staff encouraged him to pivot from welding, a skilled trade, to performing arts, fully supporting his ambitions. This encouragement unlocked his confidence and creative imagination.
“When I started at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology I was set on studying welding so I could enter the family business. When I discovered that I had an interest and talent in acting, the College gave me the opportunity to change direction, and supported me fully throughout my course.”
Since graduating from RADA in 1983, Sean has featured in some of the most popular films and TV shows including, The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. In 2006, the Association of Colleges awarded Sean a Gold Award at the Houses of Parliament, presented on behalf of Rotherham College. In 2007, he returned to Sheffield to receive honorary doctorates from both Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield, crediting Rotherham College for setting him on this path.
Sean Bean’s story proves that sometimes, the moment that changes everything is stumbling into the unknown, like discovering a passion for acting after signing up for a welding course. At Rotherham College, we celebrate this spirit: we offer more than technical training, we offer a place to discover your strengths and explore new directions.
