From experimenting with Make-up during lockdown to becoming a WorldSkills UK finalist: studying Media Makeup at Rotherham College has changed Jessie Robertson’s life.

“As I was finishing my GCSEs, the pandemic hit, and I was left feeling unsure about what route to go down, but through lockdown I started experimenting with makeup and I decided to pursue what I loved.”

Jessie Roberts, Level 3 Theatrical Hair and Media Make-up

Jessie has always been a creative individual and has a passion for art, film and gaming. During lockdown in 2020, Jessie began experimenting with theatrical make-up in her bedroom, unlocking an unknown talent.

She then decided to enrol on a course for a subject that she loved: Media Make-up at Rotherham College.

She explains how she turned her new hobby into an exciting, life-changing opportunity.

She said: “As I was finishing my GCSEs, the pandemic hit, and I was left feeling unsure about what route to go down. It was a really tough time, but through lockdown, I started experimenting with makeup and I decided to pursue what I loved, instead of basing my decision on my grades.”
“I decided to study Media Makeup at Rotherham College as it offers a number of interesting and creative modules that appealed to me.

“The course allowed me to focus on Body Art, where I am able to completely transform people. It is now my favourite aspect of creative media makeup, and is the category that I won my  Silver medal in the WorldSkills UK Creative Media Make-up competition”.

WorldSkills UK competitions are designed by industry experts and assess students’ knowledge, practical skills and employability attributes against a set criterion in a competitive, timed environment.

“My tutor Katie Asgari introduced me to the WorldSkills UK competition and encouraged me to compete, as she believed I could go far. I wouldn’t have been able to get to the final without her.

“It was a surreal feeling to get to the finals after only practising makeup for a year!

“I’m incredibly passionate about this course at Rotherham College as it has changed my life, and I am planning to go on and study my levels 4, 5 and 6 at University Centre Rotherham before pursuing a career in the film or TV industry”.
