Student Scores Silver in National Skills Competition

8 December 2021

Rotherham College Level 3 Theatrical Hair and Media Make-up student Jessie Roberts has made a big impression at the National Skills Competitions, hosted by WorldSkills UK, achieving a silver medal in Creative Media Make-up.

WorldSkills UK is an independent charity that works with educational institutions, employers, and governments, with the aim of raising standards in technical education across the UK. Rotherham College has been invited by the organisation to become a WorldSkills UK Centre of Excellence.

The Competitions pit students at the top of their game against each other from across the four home nations. It aims to provide a variety of benefits for young people, such as raising ambition, improving confidence, and developing employability skills including personal and technical.

Jessie and her family were invited to University Centre Rotherham, part of the same educational group as Rotherham College, RNN Group, to watch the results come in via a broadcasted special live event. Winners of the competitions were announced by skills champion and TV presenter Steph McGovern from her Channel 4 Packed Lunch studio, and it was during the broadcast that Jessie’s national silver medal result was declared.

Jessie said: “It’s a brilliant result, and I wasn’t so sure I’d do this well!

“For the Creative Media Make-up competition, we were given a brief called ‘Only a Matter of Time’, which we were tasked with interpreting to create a visual using a person. My take on this was how time’s finite and ends for us, so focussed on representing mortality.”

Jessie added: “It was challenging; we had a set amount of time, and I can be self-critical, so when we got partway into it, and I saw that I hadn’t made as much visual progress as some competitors it was hard not to panic. I guess that the preparation paid off though!

“I haven’t quite processed the result yet but think I’m feeling proud! I’m happy I’ve managed to do so well.”

Jessie’s family were just as happy, with loud cheers when her name was announced as a medallist.

Congratulations to Jessie for her fantastic achievement and all the effort she put in that led to her well-deserved result.
