Computing – Gregor

23 May 2022

Gregor Milligan is a Computing and Digital student that has progressed from Level 3 Computing studied at Rotherham College, to a degree in Computing and Systems Development at dedicated Higher Education campus, University Centre Rotherham (UCR).

Gregor decided to stay at Rotherham College and study locally rather than moving to university.

Gregor said,

“By staying at Rotherham College and eventually progressing onto University Centre Rotherham, I had the chance to continue working with tutors that I’ve now been taught by for the last few years and offer the support that I wouldn’t have access to in bigger study groups at a traditional university.”

“It’s through my tutors’ encouragement to intellectually push myself that’s got me this far.”

Throughout his studies, Gregor has developed a wide range of skills including data analytics and a deeper understanding of algorithms, networking and data structures; these skills have helped Gregor provisionally gain a place on his Masters in Big Data Analytics at Sheffield Hallam University in September.

Gregor adds,

“I’d like to eventually go onto a PhD in data analytics or become a data analyst, and it’s through my tutors’ encouragement to intellectually push myself that’s got me this far.

Anyone that is wanting to study a Computing course at Rotherham College should attend an Open Day first to get a feel of the place, speak to the tutors as well as current students – this way you will see first-hand whether a Computing course here will match your expectations as well as your career goals.”

Rotherham College recognises that adult education is a powerful tool for personal growth, economic resilience, and social cohesion. Across the region and UK, adults are gaining the skills to progress in their careers, build confidence, and connect with others. The impact reaches far beyond the classroom as employers’ benefit from a more adaptable workforce, communities grow stronger, and society becomes more inclusive.

With the right support, course and training, adults through adult learning can address multiple challenges at once-from closing skills gaps and tackling social isolation to reducing inequality and strengthening communities.
