The construction sector is ideal for those who like working outside, enjoy working practically and use their initiative to get things done.

Joiner/Carpenter

Average salary - £24,000 - £40,000*

Carpenters make, install and repair wooden items like wall panels, flooring, door and window frames, roof rafters, staircases, cabinets and furniture.

Day to day tasks:

Discuss plans and job instructions with clients or site managers, cut timber for floorboards, doors, skirting boards and window frames, make and fit staircases, door frames, roof timbers and partition walls, assemble fitted and free-standing furniture, install kitchen units, cabinets and shelving, construct wooden supports, called shuttering, which hold concrete in place while it sets, fit interiors in shops, bars, restaurants and offices, build stage sets for theatre, film and TV productions.*

Working environments:

You could work in a workshop, on a construction site, at a client’s business or at a client’s home. Your working environment may be dusty, at height and you’ll travel often. You may need to wear protective clothing.*

Bricklayer

Average salary - £25,000 to £45,000*

Bricklayers build houses, repair walls and chimneys and refurbish decorative stonework. They also work on restoration projects.

Day to day tasks:

Read and follow building plans for each job, measure work areas and set out the first rows of bricks or blocks, mix mortar by hand or with a mechanical mixer, use a trowel to lay mortar and place bricks, shape and trim bricks using hammers, chisels and power tools, check rows are straight using a spirit level, laser level or plumb line, repoint brickwork to repair old or damaged mortar joints and build architectural and ornamental brickwork features.*

Working environments:

You could work on a construction site or at a client’s home. Your working environment may be physically demanding, outdoors in all weathers, at height and you’ll travel often. You may need to wear protective clothing.*
