Student Dreams of Life on the Stage

15 February 2017

Georgia Hewkin came to the UK from Spain at age 17 to live her dream on the stage.

After auditioning at Manchester College and Rotherham College and being accepted to study at both, Georgia chose to study the Extended Diploma in Performing Arts: Acting at Rotherham College.

Georgia felt accepted on the course, and quickly became friends with her classmates.

Georgia was impressed by the small tutor groups at Rotherham College and the support and relationships she developed with the other dance and musical theatre students; who meet up and support each other.

She fell in love with the craft, and was offered the position of Assistant Director on the National Theatre Connections Festival project by her tutor, Denny Smith. She explained how even in her first year of study she would make lots of suggestions which her tutor would take on board.

As Assistant Director Georgia helps with rehearsals, and collaborates different ideas with Denny. During performances, Georgia helps with everything from setting up the rehearsals to deciding what mood lighting fits the scene.

Throughout the course Georgia has worked with the writer of Doctor Who, Tom MacCrae, Dan Gillespie Sells lead singer of the “Feeling”, RADA, Arts Ed, LIPA, Frantic Assembly, National Theatre Connections and Forced Entertainment.

Her class has performed the play ‘Citizenship’ at Sheffield Crucible Theatre, been on trips to London and taken part in workshops and watched plays, among other opportunities.

Georgia said “I would really recommend this course, it’s a great place to start. My favourite part has to be the different characters and improv, seeing the reactions from the audience is a great feeling.”

“From here I’d love to study at university, possibly at ALRA or the University of Central Lancashire, travel and experience the different cultures and see what they have to offer.”

Rotherham College students will be performing the play “Status Update” by Tim Etchells at The Crucible in Sheffield on Wednesday 29th March, tickets can be purchased on the door or by booking online at www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/connections-day-3

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts: Acting course prepares students for the real world giving them access to the best in the business whether that be in musical theatre, dance, acting or production arts.
