Catering and Hospitality and Computing and Digital courses have been involved in the Teach Too project to help shape curriculum, Teach Too is a pilot project in association with The Association of Colleges (AoC) Education and Training Foundation development programme, aimed at addressing quality improvement in technical and vocational teaching and learning.
The latest workshop enabled local employers and RNN Group staff and students to collaborate and discuss the aims of the project, how these qualifications can be improved and how softer skills such as communication skills and teamwork, can help learners secure their first job role.
The workshop also focused on creating a well-rounded qualification offer to achieve bridging the skills gap and enabling learners to develop tailored employability skills for their industry. The structure of activity was splitting into working groups and establishing the success of the Teach Too project so far, as well as addressing key issues via feedback from employers and learners.
Darren Foden, Curriculum Leader for Catering and Hospitality courses at Rotherham College said, “The workshop worked as a great innovation hub for the first step of getting employers involved in curriculum planning.
“I look forward to working towards a closer future relationship with local employers who are keen to have more input in our qualification design.”
The discussion groups were then asked to relay their findings, with the majority of feedback suggesting that confidence, a positive attitude towards work and work experience from part-time jobs are a fantastic way for learners to gain important life skills to prepare them when they leave college.
It was also apparent that in order for qualifications to be classed as high quality, skills that learners develop should be coupled with real-life projects, including work experience, placements, masterclasses and industry shadowing.
Bob Dyson, Managing Director of cloud based telephony platform DiSc Systems, also attended the workshop. He said, “Early engagement with students within South Yorkshire are crucial for joint future success for my company, RNN Group and the local community, so young talent isn’t lost.
“As a local employer, I’m keen to get involved and invest time into shaping a high-quality qualification that prepares young people for the competitive digital industry.”
