Rotherham College to Host WorldSkills UK Regional Heats Competition

16 May 2019

Rotherham College is set to host one of the WorldSkills UK heats on Tuesday 11th June, an annual competition that aims to help young people go further and faster in their careers, gaining the skills that employers need most.

Both College and Higher Education students will compete with other students that have travelled from all over the UK, with competitions focusing on media make-up, nail technician, beauty therapy and hairdressing skills.

To be able to compete in the regional heats, students must have successfully passed the preliminary stage, which is submitting a brief and example photographs of their designs and calibre of skills.

Tasks that students will be assessed on will vary depending on their specialist knowledge, from applying traditional beauty therapy treatments, showcasing their creativity through designs for nails, make-up and body art and giving professional advice on cut and colour.

All students will also be assessed on their professionalism with their models, making their workstation health and safety compliant and completing their tasks within time allocation.

Katie Asgari, Curriculum Team Leader for Media Make-up at Rotherham College said, “Following on from our success at UK skills last November and winning the showcase, we were asked to host the UK skills regional competitions out our centre.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our courses and what students can achieve at Rotherham College; we really look forward to networking and greeting the competitors, models and staff travelling over to us from other towns and cities. For learners to get to this stage is amazing and I wish everyone the best of luck.”

Students that successfully pass the regional heats will become finalists and be invited to the WorldSkills UK final competition, taking place at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham this November.
