New FLEX-ible Skills Projects for Adults with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities

20 November 2020

Rotherham College (part of the RNN Group) has recently launched a new communication and practical sensory programme for adults, aged 25 and over, with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The programme will help people who live with SEND to develop confidence, knowledge, skills and behaviours to participate in a range of community action projects and work-related activities within the safety of a College environment.

Each 10 – 12-week project is led and developed by the Colleges’ team of experienced specialists and is delivered in small groups, culminating in the completion of a project at the end of the period. A focus will be placed on developing key skills such as problem-solving, confidence building, teamwork, creating and maintaining friendships and relationships and communication skills. An onus is placed on additional skills such as time management, money and budgeting, independent living skills and behaviour/emotion management.

RNN Group Head of SEND and High Needs Tanya Gerstmar has helped create the new provision alongside her team of specialists.

Tanya said: “Our provision for adults who live with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities has been completely overhauled. Our new offer is designed to meet the needs of older individuals, it is not an educational pathway, but is a chance for adults with SEND and high needs in the local area to get involved in practical everyday experiences and work-related activities.

“There are many opportunities available and projects may include working in the allotments, home cooking, outdoor pursuits including our new forest school, animal care, textiles and sporting activities.”
