Employability and Careers Event Shows Learners Life Beyond College

30 March 2020

As part of National Careers Week over 400 learners attended an employability and careers event to find out what opportunities life after college could hold for them.

The popular event, hosted by Rotherham College as part of its learner enrichment programme, welcomed a number of universities, employers and charities, and offered learners the chance to speak to those at the event to find out more about their offering, including Higher Education, work experience and job opportunities.

Rotherham College Head of Quality and Learner Experience Rebecca Blackburn was delighted with the wide range of opportunities on offer for learners to find out about what they could do after completing their qualification with us.

Rebecca said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the team and such a great opportunity for our learners.”

Rotherham College Level 3 Engineering learner Adam Harrison was just one of many who attended the event to explore potential jobs openings.

He said: “I’ve already done some work experience with Cyrostar, which involved shadowing staff. I really enjoyed it so I came along today to find out about potential job opportunities with the company.”

University Centre Rotherham Recruitment and Events Officer Hanna Wright attended the event and spoke learners about how to kick start their career goals after College.

Hanna said: “The event is a great opportunity to provide students with progression advice for a range of Higher Education, careers and volunteering opportunities. I’ve enjoyed speaking with students on various programmes and levels to inspire them about what University Centre Rotherham can offer as a local study option.”

Rotherham College Skills and Employability Tutor Wendy Atkinson was instrumental in organising the event.

Wendy said: “The event has been offered as part of the learners’ enrichment and to tie in with National Careers Week. It aims to give learners the opportunity to see what’s out there beyond us, whether that’s university, an apprenticeship, or other employment opportunities.

“It also offers learners the chance to speak first-hand to employers to arrange their own work experience, so they are communicating with people they’ve never talked to before, which is a really useful skill to practice.”
