Engineering apprentice Nathan Wall recently celebrated becoming a finalist in the apprenticeship awards, which is held annually to recognise the talents and contribution of apprentices to local businesses.

Nathan won the award for the Higher Apprenticeship category, after being nominated by his employer AESSEAL for his strong worth ethic and determination to achieve.

First joining the company on a work experience placement whilst at school, Nathan produced a 26-page feedback report detailing what he had learned during his time at the company. The report was circulated to every department, including the Managing Director, helping him secure an apprenticeship two years later in recognition of his proactive attitude to learning.

After achieving a double distinction in the AESSEAL Advanced Apprenticeship, Nathan is now completing a HNC in Mechanical Engineering at Rotherham College in order to give himself further skills and qualifications to excel in his career.

Nathan commented, “At school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do until my work experience, where I got the chance to see a real working environment, and eventually as an apprentice earn a wage while training.

“I had exposure to a variety of departments in engineering and manufacturing, and it is through that experience that I’ve now progressed onto a testing engineer, a role that involves full inspection of products and how they could be improved.”

Alongside his studies, Nathan was chosen as trainee-mentor to six other apprentices on the AESSEAL Advanced Apprenticeships, due to his hard work and commitment as well as acting as an ambassador for AESSEAL, visiting schools to engage young people in considering a career in the engineering sector.

David Amory, of AESSEAL, said Nathan “embodies the ethos of AESSEAL”, whilst his “dedication and ambition will see progress to a very bright future with the company.”

Simon Hartley, business development officer for RNN Training added, “AESSEAL are a great local employer who put a lot of time and effort into their staff. Working with us at RNN Training, we have a collective approach and Nathan has been fully involved since the start of his apprenticeship.

“He is a great role model for young Apprentices coming to the College and proves that although the skills gap isn’t quite closed just yet, we are certainly doing our bit to help in Rotherham.”
