Rotherham College Fuel Ambition at Barnsley School’s Event
Rotherham College recently attended the Ambition Barnsley event at the Metrodome Leisure Complex in Barnsley providing information, advice and guidance on post-16 study options that will allow local youngsters the opportunity to meet and exceed their ambitions.
The event attracts hundreds of school children from Barnsley and the surrounding areas who are seeking advice and guidance on the steps they can take to work towards their future aspirations.
With a wide range of curriculum areas represented at the event, staff delivered a range of interactive activities and demonstrations that allowed the attendees to experience the hands-on learning they would undertake when studying with us.
Animal Care tutors brought along a variety of small animals including an African snail, a leopard gecko and a tarantula, which attracted intrigued visitors eager to learn more about handling and caring for these types of species – all of which we house at as part of our working farm at our Dinnington Campus.
University Centre Rotherham (UCR) also attended the event, providing information about the range of Higher Education courses that are available locally across a wide range of subjects including Performing Arts, Computing, Graphic Design and Hair and Media Make-up.
Hair and Media Make-up Curriculum Team Leader, Katie Asgari, showcased Media Make-up students work to attendees and exhibitors with intricate prosthetics and detailed mock injuries created during their studies.
Katie explained: “Our offer at Rotherham is pretty unique in the region. We offer Media Make-Up courses from Level 1 all the way through to degree level.
“As well as promoting the courses available at the College, today is also about promoting the industry. There are such a variety of careers available depending on the level of qualification achieved. From freelance make-up artists to working in salons, department stores or for cosmetic companies. Learners who go on to study at a higher level can go on to work in TV, film or theatre.
“We’ve had learners who have done really, really well. As a curriculum area we really go above and beyond to ensure our students gain exposure in the real world – we don’t just want our learners to learn in the classroom. We’ve been providing hair and media make-up for a local pantomime for the last nine years, which gives our learners really good experience.
“Emily Smith is a current student at UCR, who was a gold medalist at World Skills UK last year, and is an ambassador for them this year, she’s recently worked as Head of Make-up for a British feature film, Innocent Candy, that will premiere soon.”
