Skills for Life – Aleksandra
In 2004, Aleksandra Bradshaw arrived in the UK equipped with determination and ambition. Starting life in a new country can be a daunting experience for anybody; even more so for Aleks who spoke little English.
She set a goal to embark on a successful career and her first step was to learn the language of her new country. She enrolled on the ESOL Skills for Life Level 1 at Rotherham College.
“I came to the UK ten years ago and I didn’t speak a great deal of English. I started attending ESOL classes at Rotherham College and learning English almost from scratch,” she said.
“When I came to this College I worked as a cleaner and in a restaurant peeling vegetables to earn extra money. It taught me that if you worked hard and believed in yourself you could be successful.”
After completing her ESOL course, Aleks returned to the College to work as an Administrator in the Learning Centre. The vibrant learning atmosphere encouraged Aleks to pursue her ambitions and become a teacher.
In August 2012, after completing a Diploma in Teaching at Rotherham College, she qualified as a teacher.
Making the transition from student to teacher has helped Aleks establish a very good relationship with her students
She said: “As a teacher, the students know I have been in their place and I think that makes them more ambitious to succeed in this country.”
One of her tutors, Hussan Al-Muhammad, recalls how her dedication to learning was the success in achieving her ambitions.
“Right from the start, Aleks showed an admirable commitment and dedication to her learning and programme of study, “he said.
“She was always eager to learn more and to improve on everything she did. She was very popular with everyone in her class and her helpful nature was apparent as soon as she walked in the classroom; she will make a fantastic teacher.”
Aleks is now a full time member of teaching staff at the College and is enjoying supporting students to learn ESOL.
She said: “I love my job and I enjoy working with the students. I am surrounded by inspirational tutors such as Hussan Al-Muhammad and Barry Holmes who have supported me both as a student and a colleague.
“When I was a student at the College their expertise and advice was really helpful. I looked up to them and they were inspiring; hopefully I can follow their example and become a role model to my students.”
Aleks is now doing her BA (Honours) Degree in Education and Professional Development at Rotherham College and is planning to expand her career prospects further at Rotherham College.
