Motor Vehicle – Rory
Rory has had an interest in motor vehicle from a young age and at thirteen years old he was helping his brother fix and restore his friend’s cars.
Originally gaining a place on the full-time Motor Vehicle course at Rotherham College, the opportunity came up for Rory to switch to an Apprenticeship at a car dealership in Rotherham.
“At the start of my Apprenticeship I shadowed the staff while they showed me different tasks around the workshop. They would explain what was wrong with the vehicles and show me how to check them. Soon I started identifying faults for myself and I was encouraged to carry out checks independently,” Rory said.
Rory’s progress at college supported by his workplace as when he learned something new he was able to develop his skills further by practicing it at work.
Thanks to his dedication and hard work, Rory won a Student Apprentice of the Year Award at Rotherham College. “I enjoyed my Apprenticeship so I was willing to learn and show appreciation for the teaching I’d received. Although I had a basic understanding of vehicles before I started college, I had no idea how to more complex tasks like stripping a gearbox, changing a clutch or reading measurements on electric components,” Rory said.
After completing his Apprenticeship, Rory gained a position at Volkswagen JCT600 in Rotherham. In his current role, Rory can go on specialist training courses covering topics such as hybrid vehicles, as well as learning about other elements of working industry, such as completing work to manufacturer’s standards.
“I highly advise an Apprenticeship because it’s better to learn in a real life situation and have the ability to work on a wide range of vehicles while you’re studying,” Rory said. “When you’re working in garage and you don’t do a job right, it’s your fault. There’s more pressure than learning everything in a college environment but you work to a higher standard because it reflects on you.”
Rory is enjoying his current job and wants to build up his experience before possibly moving to a different dealership to gather in-depth knowledge about another manufacturer. “Eventually I would love to own my own business,” Rory said. “Another of my goals is to finishing restoring a 1993 VW Polo I have, but that could take a few years yet.”
