Media Make-up – Emily
Emily Smith started her journey at Rotherham College in 2015 with a Level 2 course in Hair and Media Make-up and has progressed all the way up to the HNC in Hair and Media Make-up, with a long list of accomplishments under her belt.
Emily didn’t have much interest in make-up until she was introduced to face painting and body art during her A-Levels, after attending an Open Event at Rotherham College she chose to undertake a course dedicated to the subject.
Since 2014, Emily has worked flexibly at Big Tops Children’s Play Centre doing face painting and has been working at the Blossom Tree Salon in Dinnington doing make-up ever since her work experience with College in 2015 where she chose to stay on.
During her time at College, Emily has taken part in numerous extracurricular activities and competitions. Her first competition was the AHT in Blackpool where her street art face painting placed First and inspired her to continue competing. She went on to win First in the national competition, won Second with her bridal look at the National Make-up Awards, won second place at Beauty UK, placed First in War Paint and also achieved the accolade of Rising Star out of everyone who competed and went on to win Gold at the World Skills finale in 2016.
As a result of her success at World Skills UK, Emily was chosen for a week-long trip to Japan in October 2017 to take part in an international competition at Yamano Beauty College, as well as sightseeing in Tokyo, visiting Disneyland and attending a Urasenke Tea Ceremony, complete with getting dressed in a traditional kimono.
Her studies were enriched with trips and masterclasses with well-known make-up companies such as Kryolan and Dermalogica. Her time on the course has also been jam-packed with a wide number of additional projects such as the annual intercollege competitions, Wickersley School Pantos, the Disaster Simulation in partnership with London Fire Brigade and simulations for Rotherham Hospital staff training to name a few.
Once she has completed the HNC, Emily plans to continue onto the HND course and then a BA Top-Up course to continue building her skills and experiences in the industry of hair and media make-up.
Emily said “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my course, all the extra events, masterclasses and show cases, such as working with the London fire brigade and the UK Skills showcases, have been amazing experiences and opportunities to work as a team in the industry. The tutors are really supportive and encourage you to step up your game and be the artist you want to be.
“I’ve especially enjoyed the competitions because you get to do different looks that you wouldn’t get to do otherwise, the external ones are great because you do different themed briefs to a strict time limit, you get to meet lots of people and network.”
