Learning outside of the classroom
Students on the Prince’s Trust Team programme have recently completed a community project at the Dalton Youth Club, Rotherham.
The project is designed to improve the team building skills of the learners and to promote the benefits of voluntary work within the community. The group carried out a range of gardening activities to smarten the garden and allotment area of the youth club as well as planting a number of pots and hanging baskets. Graham Cliff, Manager of the Dalton Youth Club was pleased with the finished results and said; “" It was really great work. The group clearly understood the project and were committed to it. They seemed to have a very positive experience throughout the project." Prince’s Trust Team Leader for the College Jenny Upton explained, “This was a fantastic community project and an opportunity for young people to take ownership of the activities they are involved in outside of the classroom. The learners hope their efforts will encourage other young people to undertake voluntary work within their community.” The Prince’s Trust programme provides learners with a range of skills including; problem solving, improved communication skills and a wealth of valuable experience for their CV. The group are now in the next phase of the programme carrying work placements at a variety of organisations including; Badsley Moor Infants School, RMBC and Gamestation in Sheffield.
