Hospitality students compete in UK Barista Championship heats
Towards the end of February, Level 3 Hospitality students Shaun Green and Jason Childs competed in the Northern and Midlands heat of the UK Barista Championships which were held at the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield.
Their task was to produce 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and 4 cups of their signature drink. They had 15 minutes preparation time followed by 15 minutes to perfect their drinks. This national competition is entered by Baristas, all of whom are experts in their field and our College is the only one to enter students to take part. The two entrants were supported with extra training from David Veal at Miko Café Sienna and Paul Meikle-Janney and David Olenjik from Coffee Community. Sadly Shaun and Jason missed out on making it through to the semi-finals but both are determined to try again next year. Catering and Hospitality Lecturer Alison Lomax explained, “This competition is a great way for our students to show off their existing skills and pick up tips and techniques from the best in the business. Without the support we receive from our industry partners, we wouldn’t be able to give our students such a fantastic learning experience.”
