The Prince’s Trust team work within the community
Our Prince’s Trust students have recently completed a community project for the Unity Centre in Rotherham.
The team carried out a number of tasks to improve the centre’s Nursery’s play area including; painting the children’s play equipment, creating a wall mural and also making raised flower beds, bird boxes and bird feeders. The students were delighted with the end results and were able to see how their hard work had paid off. Prince’s Trust student Leanne Potts said, “The project has been good fun. I love painting, it’s so relaxing. I’m so glad I came on this course, it has really helped to build my confidence and everybody in the team gets along well. It’s great.” The group raised £121.50 in order to purchase the equipment for the project through a number of fundraising events and activities including a ‘Name the Teddy Bear’ competition; a Cake sale, a tombola and a children’s Halloween themed event with arts and crafts, party games, skittles and refreshments. The team also received a lot of support from members of the community to aid the project including Wickes store in Rotherham who donated £30 in order for the students to purchase some of the paint they required. Delighted with the Nursery’s new outdoor makeover, the Unity Centre’s Manager Peter White expressed his gratitude towards the project, “There has been such a transformation in the appearance of our nursery, its equipment and grounds. The outdoors area looks renewed – the equipment is freshly painted and the children now have raised garden beds to plant seeds and grow flowers and vegetables. The young people on this programme have simply blown me away with their high levels of enthusiasm, creativity and talent.” Prince’s Trust Team Leader for the College Jenny Upton expressed her pride towards the students’ efforts explaining that the purpose of the project is to “improve the students’ learning and performance, to enable them to work with others and to contribute to the local community.” Miss Upton also added that “the projects are a fantastic way for the students to develop themselves and to learn a wide range of skills including; communication, problem solving and team building.”
