Hospitality students reach semi-finals at Barista Championships

At the start of the year, Hospitality Supervision students took part in an internal competition to qualify for the UK Barista Championships.

Entrants made 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and 4 cups of their signature drink. They had 15 minutes practice time in which to set the grinder and run through their espressos in order to check quality and timings. This was followed by 15 minutes in which to make the drinks. The winning 3 students went on to represent the college at the Midlands heat in Birmingham on Wednesday 11th February 2009. This national competition is entered by Baristas, all of whom are experts in their field with Rotherham College of Arts and Technology being the only college to enter students. The three entrants were supported with extra training from David Veal at Café Sienna (Hellaby) and Paul Meikle-Janney from Coffee Community (Meltham-Huddersfield). Throughout the day itself their team mates from college cheered them on with an outstanding result. Carl Fleischer, Jess Hooper and Jason Childs came 3rd, 6th and 11th placed respectively and all received certificates in the presentation ceremony at the end. The top 24 across the regional heats then went on to two semi final heats at the SECC ScotHot exhibition in Glasgow, with the winning 3 from each going on to the final. Carl Fleischer made it to the semi finals and was supported by his team who cheered him on throughout. The event was also streamed live on the internet with 1500 people watching his performance on-line. Unfortunately Carl didn’t make it through to the finals, but this is only the start of his journey as he and others within the group intend to enter again next year.
