MP opens new motor vehicle and construction workshops
Rotherham College of Arts and Technology officially opened their new £2.5 million motor vehicle and construction workshops on Friday 23rd January.
The ceremony held at Rother Valley Campus included guests from the education sector, local employers joined by the contractors and architects involved in the building’s development. The occasion was marked by George Trow, Chief Executive and College Principal thanking guests for their support and welcoming them to this new facility. Joan Brier, Chair of Governors, was pleased the College had reached this significant milestone. Joan thanked colleagues, students and guests for the tremendous support and hard work put into the project. Local MP for Rother Valley, Kevin Barron declared the building officially open by revealing a commemorative plaque. Mr. Barron went on to discuss his support for vocational qualifications in education, whilst making references to his experience as a mining apprentice with the College in the 1960’s. He added that Vocational Qualifications are “vital for young people” and that they “provide learners with a good chance at life.” The new building has taken approximately 26 weeks to build from start to finish. The facilities were built by local contractors Admiral Construction Ltd and designed by Bond Bryan, who is currently working with the College to design its £70 million Town Centre Campus. The new motor vehicle and construction classrooms and workshops are designed to a high specification and equipped to industry standard. The motor vehicle workshops were fitted out by local suppliers Straightset and equipped to a modern day standard at the level of a prestige dealership. The facilities provide enrichment to the College’s construction delivery in carpentry and wood occupations. The new joinery workshops will enable the College to develop its 14-19 provision further and support the development and delivery of the 14-19 diplomas. College spokesperson Carly Jones said “The College are very proud of these new facilities and the excellent resources. The new workshops provide great opportunities for teaching the new diplomas, apprenticeships and developing partnerships with local schools to deliver school link programmes.” Joan Brier said “The decision to build this was taken to encourage the community to support further education.”
