Colleges Week Celebrations

The College is proud to take part in the inaugural Colleges Week celebrations.

What is Colleges Week? Colleges Week is an opportunity for colleges in the Learning and Skills Sector to promote our contribution to education and training - and in turn, how this impacts upon people, their lives and their livelihoods. Most people will realise that their locality is served by one or more colleges but do they really know what goes on in the colleges? Colleges Week helps to share information with individuals and organisations on what colleges do and what we can offer in terms of delivering education, skills and qualifications. It is a celebration of contribution- to individuals, communities, employers, business and the whole of the UK’s social and economic landscape. There are 435 colleges in the United Kingdom and Rotherham College of Arts and Technology is the biggest of the colleges within the borough of Rotherham. We are a general further education college and each year, we have over 20,000 enrolments on courses and our budget is around £24million. About colleges in the sector Did you know that: • Every year, colleges provide education for over 3million people • That there are 737,000 16-18 year olds attending colleges – compared with 460,000 attending all schools. • There are 120,000 14-16 year olds studying at college. • Colleges provide 48% of all entrants into Higher Education. Success and Rotherham College go hand in hand To celebrate Colleges Week, we’ve put together some examples of people who have been successful at our college and what it means to them. The case studies demonstrate how colleges mean different things to us all and help highlight the range of activities undertaken at college. Visit the College website to find out more (www.rotherham.ac.uk). Colleges Week is 10th-16th November 2008 Colleges Week is taking place 10-16 November to celebrate the role colleges play in unlocking talent in communities and transforming the lives of learners. Colleges Week is being co-ordinated and organised by the Association of Colleges (AoC), the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills (DIUS) and the Learning & Skills Council (LSC). For more information go to www.collegesweek.org. Principal and Chief Executive George Trow is pleased to announce our participation in the celebrations and highlight the huge contribution that the College makes to people and their lives. “Colleges Week is about taking time to shout from the rooftops about what goes on in colleges and how individuals, communities and organisations benefit from our work. Our highly committed staff work tremendously hard day in and day out to make the difference for everyone we work with, but seldom do we take time out to make this into a celebration of contribution. We are pleased to be part of the celebrations and hope that in highlighting what we do, we are able to demonstrate what we can offer to everyone in our community.” “We continue to go from strength to strength, with a record number of enrolments. We hope people around the community will be inspired to find out how colleges can unlock the talent within them.”
