Funding is available for higher education courses; details of the grants and loans you may be able to apply for are listed below. Aside from the Access to Learning Fund, all of the information below relates to full-time students. Part-time students may also be able to apply for the part-time Fee Grant and Course Grant (depending on your household income and personal circumstances).

Do call our Student Services on 08080 722777 with any questions you may have. Due to limited national funding, we can’t guarantee that every funding application will be successful.

Tuition Fee Loan

This loan is for full-time students it will pay for your tuition fees; you should apply for the amount that your course costs. You don’t need to start repaying it until you’ve finished your course and are earning over £15,000 a year. It will be paid directly to us, on your behalf. Find out more at Direct.gov.

Maintenance Loan

This loan is designed to cover your living expenses (food, books, travel, etc). You don’t need to start repaying it until you’ve finished your course and are earning over £15,000 a year. It is usually paid directly into your bank in three instalments, one at the start of each term. If you also receive the Maintenance Grant, the amount of Maintenance Loan available to you may be reduced. You must be aged under 60 at the start of your course to qualify. Find out more at Direct.gov.

Maintenance Grant

The difference between this grant and the loan above is that you don’t have to pay this back. It’s designed to cover living expenses and provides up to £2,906 per year, depending on your household income. It is paid in three instalments, one at the start of each term. The amount of Maintenance Grant you receive could affect the amount of Maintenance Loan (see above) you can borrow. Find out more at Direct.gov.

Special Support Grant

This replaces the Maintenance Grant if you claim income-related benefits. It provides up to £2,906 per year, depending on your household income, and is for extra course-related costs such as books, equipment or childcare. You can’t receive both the Maintenance Grant and the Special Support Grant (but the Special Support Grant won’t affect your entitlement to the Maintenance Loan). If you claim income-related benefits, Jobcentre Plus and the housing benefits section of the local authority won’t take this grant into account when calculating your income. Find out more at Direct.gov.

Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs)

DSAs can help pay for extra course costs which arise directly from your disability, mental health condition or learning difficulty. How much you’re entitled to does not depend on your own or your family’s income. You can get up to £5,161 for the whole course for equipment; up to £20,520 a year for a non-medical helper; and up to £1,724 as a general allowance, plus reasonable extra travel costs. You don’t have to pay it back. You’ll need to complete an application form. Find out more at Direct.gov.
