Help with your childcare

There are a number of childcare support funds that students can apply to if appropriate the following information will enable you to understand the criteria and support available to you.

Care to Learn

If you’re aged 16 to under 20 years of age, this could help to pay for your childcare and related travel costs whilst studying. More information is available in the ‘Care to Learn’ leaflet from Student Service. You can apply online or get an application form from Student Services, or call the Care to Learn helpline on 0845 600 2809.

20+ Childcare Bursary Support Fund

If you have one or more children and you plan to study at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology, you’ll want to be sure your child/ren are safe and happy while you’re studying. Our Student Services team will help you to find the right childcare for your child/ren, and can also apply to the college student bursary support fund to help with childcare costs for one child.  To download an application form click here

New Deal for Lone Parents

If you get Lone Parent Income Support Benefit, you should talk to your Jobcentre Plus advisor before deciding to enrol on a course. You may be able to register for the New Deal for Lone Parent scheme, and get an extra top-up to help with the costs of things like travel, childcare and equipment costs.

Our own college nursery

Your child/ren will love our own college nursery on the Rother Valley Campus: it was graded as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2009/10. It provides secure, stimulating care throughout the week for children aged from 6 months to 5 years old. All of the staff are fully qualified and will help your child to make friends and enjoy learning through a fantastic range of play activities.

If there isn’t a place available for your child/ren at our college nursery, or your child isn’t eligible for a place (perhaps because they are aged over 5), a number of subsidised places are available at Granby Howard Nursery in the College’s Howard Building (Town Centre Campus). We can also provide details of local childcare providers such as other nurseries, crèches or childminders. Spare places at our nursery are available to non-students.

Do you qualify for help with costs?

You may be able to get financial help to cover some or all of your childcare costs, either in our own nursery or with a provider elsewhere. You should qualify for financial support if:
  • You regularly attend college
  • You’re on state benefit
  • You’re on a low income
  • You have a dependent child or children (up to the age of 14)
  • Your childcare provider is properly registered with the local authority. You can find more information about funding for childcare on our Student Finance page.
