An apprenticeship lets you earn a salary while you learn the skills you need to do a job well. There are lots of
benefits and you get a recognised qualification. With fierce competition for jobs, there’s never been a better time to get the practical, work-related skills employers are looking for.
How does it work?
Most of the training is on the job. The rest usually takes place at a college or a specialist training organisation, which you can do on day-release or over a number of days in a block. Your classroom time could vary from one day every two weeks to two days every week.
How big is the apprenticeship scheme?
Nationally, over 85,000 employers offer apprenticeships in more than 130,000 locations. There are almost 200 apprenticeships, which could prepare you for hundreds of jobs.
How long does an apprenticeship take?
Normally between 1 and 4 years, depending on the level you take, your abilities and the industry you work in.
Who can be an apprentice?
You can apply if you’re aged over 16 and you live in England and you aren’t in full-time education.
How much will you earn?
The minimum salary is £2.60 per hour for 16-24 year olds and £6.08 for those over 25. However, many apprentices earn a lot more. You’ll also get 20 days’ paid holiday a year.
Is it easy to get an apprenticeship?
There’s competition for places with employers. Therefore you’ll need to show that you’re serious about working hard, and that you understand your responsibilities to yourself and the employer.
