Doing an
apprenticeship gives you the practical, vocational skills you need to prepare for a specific career. There are many benefits to doing an apprenticeship, including:
Earn as you learn
As an apprentice you’ll earn a salary and get paid holidays. As your skills develop, your pay will increase. You’ll also get the same benefits as other employees where you work, such as pension contributions and any subsidised canteen and leisure facilities.
Don’t get stuck in a classroom
If you prefer to be hands-on than in a classroom, you’ll enjoy being on the job. You may only need to spend as little as a day a fortnight in college.
Get the skills you need for the workplace
Your training will give you the practical, job-specific skills that employers look for. However, by working alongside other employees of all ages you’ll also develop your confidence and important skills like communication and teamwork.
Get a recognised qualification
Completing an apprenticeship will earn you a nationally recognised qualification such as an NVQ.
Get real-life experience
By training in the workplace you’ll learn exactly how things are done in the ‘real world’ of work, such as how to follow the processes and use industry equipment.
Have a more successful career
Research shows that, on average, people who did an apprenticeship earn over £100,000 more in their lifetime than other employees.
You might stay on
Sometimes, employers offer their apprentices a permanent job after they finish their apprenticeship.
You could reach higher
Apprenticeships give you choices in your career. Many universities value
higher-level apprenticeships and will gladly offer you a place on a foundation degree course (or similar).
